Online Perl books

Wassercrats has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

A few months ago, I came across *** deleted by Wassercrats *** which provides the full text of many computer books. I was suspicious about whether they had the right to do that, but the books were a little old and the site had a decent Google page rank (not fly-by-night), so I figured they might have permission. Today I found a similar resource at *** deleted by Wassercrats ***, which includes the full text of some O'Rielly books in their *** deleted by Wassercrats ***, including:

The Perl CD Bookshelf

* Perl in a nutshell
* Learning Perl
* Learning Perl on Win32
* Programming Perl
* Advanced Perl programming
* Perl cookbook
Again, I think they're all old editions, but it's still a useful resource. Does anyone know if they're allowed to do this?

    I'd guess not, based on the copyright statement: "This CD-ROM is intended for use by one individual. As such, you may make copies for your own personal use. However, you may not provide copies to others, or make this reference library available to others over a LAN or other network."

    Edited by davido: disabled link to a website that violated US Copyright laws by electronically distributing O'Reilly books without authorization.

    Just FYI, some complete and perfectly legal non-O'Rielly perl books can be found at http://learn.perl.org.

    It is expressly disallowed in the O'Reilly copyright statement. What's more, some of the authors of those (and other O'Reilly) books mentioned are known to be strong contributors to the Perlmonks site's daily activity. They don't deserve to have their copyright violated, and their intellectual property freely distributed without permission, and without compensation.

    Such sites pop up from time to time. And not surprisingly, such sites disappear from time to time as well.

      Hi davido, you mentioned that several authors are actively participating in the daily activities at Perl Monks. I know that merlyn is one of them, 'cause I got one of his books. Do you happen to know any others? Thanks.

        It all depends on what you mean by author. I assume that you mean that they have written a book. Here the ones that I can remember right now, in no particular order and definitely missing some: Dominus, Chromatic, davorg, spudzeppelin... Hmm, this list seems a bit short. Considering that merlyn and TheDamian were already mentioned by others, who am I missing?

    FWIW, you can get the real cd, of that early version, on ebay or half.com for basically the shipping cost. It's the best value on the internet. Search ebay.com for "Perl CD Bookshelf"

    OReilly doesn't like that, and it's illegal in US, but in Russia they can do whatever they want

      For what it's worth, the offender in this case is in Spain, at La Universidad de Zaragoza.

        Well the other one is in russia, but it appears the "programming perl" is no longer on it, despite the link.

    I appreciate that you deleted the links to the copyrighted material, but what made you post those links in the first place? O'Reilly's been very good to those of us in high tech workplaces, and the links you posted are clear copyright violations.

    No, in case you are wondering, I did not downvote your node -- but in future, please don't link to copyrighted material from this site unless you have permission from the copyright holder.
