( [id://3333]=superdoc: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Hello, my name is Alex, and I love statistics -- father and grandfather were both actuaries.

I'm an Aries in Region A, and I was wondering if we could see some standard deviations. The median is cool, but that's just the (n/2)th entry in the sorted list (or the average of (n/2) and ((n+1)/2) if there are an even number of entries) -- I'd also like to get an idea of the shape of the curve (kurtosis: +ve or -ve?) as well as the size of the standard deviation.

The other thought that occurred to me was wondering about what kind of groups we'd get if we did some kind of nearest-neighbour exercise based on a mix of age and distance. Try for different sized groups, also find the most isolated monks .. the possiblities for wasting time are almost endless.

Use:  <p> text here (a paragraph) </p>
and:  <code> code here </code>
to format your post; it's "PerlMonks-approved HTML":

  • Are you posting in the right place? Check out Where do I post X? to know for sure.
  • Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
    <code> <a> <b> <big> <blockquote> <br /> <dd> <dl> <dt> <em> <font> <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <hr /> <i> <li> <nbsp> <ol> <p> <small> <strike> <strong> <table> <td> <th> <tr> <tt> <u> <ul>
  • Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
