I know this loosely related, but Portuguese is my first language. Most programming languages are refered to as being masculine, as are books and compilers, so it struck me as a bit odd reading about the book, the language and the compiler as a she...
Then again, my father's main complaint about the portuguese language (he's american btw) is that many objects were attributed a gender that made very little sense. The example he always chose to give was 'the boat'. In portuguese: 'o barco' is masculine. He always thought of boats as being very feminine, and I guess I have to agree with the both of you.
