Thanks for all the replies. Its a lot of good stuff to digest, but luckily, this first entry helped me understand the basic concept and deal with the question at hand.
Now to try and get some more work done so I have time to revisit Learning Perl.

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
