We switched from IBM mainframes to Unix at NASA back in the late 80's (just about when Perl 5 came out). One of the field engineers for the Convex machines said, "Look, you could learn shell, sed, awk, and C, or you could just learn Perl and do everything you want to anyway."
It was good advice.

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
