The term you are looking for is "log rotation". Most people would do this with an external utility like logrotate. The Log::Log4Perl distribution contains a FAQ which includes the question How can I rotate a logfile with newsyslog?. The fact that newsyslog is singled out for attention would seem to imply that other log rotators "just work".
