Slackware 12.0. However, my laptop is from 1996, vintage Intel 80486 DX4, so I'm not the best source on tips for recent laptops.
(X11 is terribly slow even with 24 MB of RAM, but otherwise the system runs fine, even with Linux 2.6.)

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
