And I tried this on a system with Perl 5.8.0 with similar success:
SEA32895-N2 c:\HELP\PerlScripts>perl pathq.pl
Found C:\HELP\Docs\R2009\sp01\
SEA32895-N2 c:\HELP\PerlScripts>perl -v
This is perl, v5.8.0 built for MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
Is it possible that you do not have permission to read one of the directories in the path \HELP\Docs\R2009\sp01 and so are failing on permission rather than not seeing the directory?

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
