$packed = pack 'n/(n/a*)', 1..9;;
@array = unpack 'C*', $packed;;
print join ', ' , @array;;
Gives:
0, 9, 0, 1, 49, 0, 1, 50, 0, 1, 51, 0, 1, 52, 0, 1, 53, 0, 1, 54, 0, 1, 55, 0, 1, 56, 0, 1, 57
It looks to me like the first n/ is storing the size of your list. The (n/a*) part is then used that many times (in this case, 9).

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
