YACR (Yet Another Chatterbox Request)

Yes, it's time to pick on our favorite bogeyman again, the chatterbox. Lately, I've been using it a bit to have conversations with some fellow monks via the /msg feature, and the character limit is getting quite annoying, causing me to send 4 or more separate messages to complete a (not so lengthy) thought. Yes, I know it's a *chat* not a *diatribe|rant|soap* box, but maybe we could find a way to extend the character limits for at least private messages? Or perhaps a separate area for private messages? Something a little less than having to switch to email, but a little more than the chatterbox. Other ideas, comments, flames welcome. :)

Note that you can fix this yourself fairly easily by using one of the chatterbox clients and adding the auto-split feature if it isn't already present in that client. If you do this, please submit the code to the maintainer of that client so all can benefit from it. - tye (but my friends call me "Tye")	[reply]

Well, it's a Chatterbox :-) But I think it could be a solution, to allow reg. users to send messages to each others, so e.g. when you visit your home node, you (and only you) will see alist of messages, others have sent to you, and you can reply on them. Each message might bear a checkbox "delete" which might be unchecked to keep the message until the next session, so one day you get tired of unchecking and these messages will be removed. All in all, this is what e-mail does, but here it would only work on "localhost" somehow. but all decision is left to your taste	[reply]

personally, I find the temptation to treat the chatterbox like IRC pretty hard to resist. Wouldn't it be nice if there were a #perlmonks channel on some server somewhere? And if there is, that perhaps that could be better advertised? I suppose there's an accessibility issue with IRC (i.e. you need something other than just a web browser to use it; but then, that's already the case with the chatterbox clients) Surely the collective we is not so opposed to, say, a java client accessible through a webpage that having a channel like that wouldn't be feasible. Philosophy can be made out of anything -- or less	[reply]

I stand definitely opposed. At home and at work I am behind different firewalls which I do not control. While I could get around them, I prefer not to. Therefore IRC or random new protocols are and shall remain inaccessible to me. (In practice if not in theory.)	[reply]
