I'd use Perl 6.
my @results = sort { complex_operation($^a) } @list;
If you pass Perl 6's sort a block that takes a single argument, it will use it as a key for sorting the data, as a ST would.

        I've taken a few days to think about this and I still don't get what you mean. Sarcasm or sage advice? Maybe you could expland this a little?
