dynamic nicks -or- big PITA for vroom : )

by jptxs (Curate)
on Nov 04, 2000 at 00:10 UTC ( [id://39894]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

my guess is this would be next to impossible on the work/benefit ratio scale, but I was thinking about how when I was active on IRC I used to take my nick and append my current location (city+state) to it so if I was near a net buddy they would know it. How difficult would it be to gain the ability to change our nick's to display something different in the CB and the 'other monks' box? I'm thinking very. If so, ignore my insolence I beg you. If however this is not as hard as it seems to my nortal mind, may be it could be granted?

on IRC you basiclaly typed /nick {new nick name}. so i would type /nick jptxsCHI when i was in chicago so my fellow monks could help me burn my company expense account for lunch ; )

I like the idea of being able to see who you are geographically close to, but I think modifying nicknames would certainly clutter the chatterbox a lot. So how about this way of doing it: have a node where you can enter your current location, and then a page where you can see, in alphabetical order, all the locations that people have entered. So not everyone would have to participate, but those who did would be listed there, and you could check that page to see if there were other people in the same area or city, without imposing the information on others using perlmonks.org.

BTW, right now I'm in Athens (Greece) for a conference, until Wednesday. Any monks near in the area? I won't have net access after today, but I'm staying at the Athens Plaza hotel, give me a call and we can go have dinner or at least a beer :-)

Ouzo and octupus is more traditional.

fully agree, especially the Chatterbox would blow up, but there's space left in the Other:Users nodelet to have a row to display current location if set :-)

mh, the idea in general seems to me is supporting somehow if you are going to meet the others.
But your location (or residence) is on your homenode. But there you could also state the top-level-domain-name of the client, from which u accessed the net, so your location might be clearer.
But also you could simply modify your homenode all time you move :-) as I don't see any possibility to make this automatically except you're using a mobile phoneto access which would allow to determine your position somewhat, but would you like that?
I thought this was the meaning of having a location entry in the home node ? Or should there be a second entry for your residence so the location would always imply to be the current location?

Given that jptxs was talking about burning company lunch monies, I suspect he's talking about very temporary moves (aka business trips). It'd definitely be a PITA to change your homenode every time you went on a trip. Not for me, since I don't get to go on such trips, but maybe for him.

you're right on the money. these are very temp movements and, since what I'm looking to do is push not pull, the home node is not the best idea. I can't expect everymonk to be checking my homenode, but I could easily see a monk checking the newest nodes and seeing jptxs+SF-CA and thinking, "wow, jptxs is in Cali, maybe I can spounge some lunch off of him" : )

Don't mind jptxs, his mind evidently always goes "nortal" (which causes him to think very) when he's typing with one hand and packing luggage with the other ;-)

It is a neat idea, but I wouldn't want the Chatterbox to turn into a full-blown MUD, e.g.

    /d00d Goodbye
    Albanach sez l8tr d00dz!
    /walk
    Albannach leaves the room
    /run
    Albanach leaves in a hurry
    /runs
Albannach leaves for the washroom in a hurry

All this would be generally pleasing to my dept. (FBI). However, I must warn you that we would also need further access to your encryption schemes as well as keys and we would censor all lines coming to and from your mobile unit.
