Hmm...why are we women so underrepresented?

    Several reasons are possible:
    • there are more women here but they can't be bothered to vote
    • girls want a horse for christmas, boys a computer
    • women prefer other programming languages (in that case I'd be no woman)
    • programming boys get together whereas programming girls are lone wolves, not beeing accepted by the male majority (generally speaking, not in PerlMonks)
    • ... whatever ...

    • No, I'm not serious ... never been.

      Perl is definitely a chick language. Why do you think I decided to learn it? Now, browsing the web and finding web sites to talk about a programming language is definitely something women don't tend to do.
        I think that more women would be attracted to Perl if it had more "pink" functions (the name "perl" is certainly a good start). I recommended some changes in perl6 to make perl more "feminine":
        • instead of chomp(), use chew_lightly()
        • chop()=>slice()
        • sort()=>organize()
        • sleep()=>beauty_sleep() with umask()
        • sin()=>naughty()
        • push(),pop()=>slide_on(),etc. (these functions are often misinterpreted by women as come-ons)
        • no=>no (this keyword is often misinterpreted by men)
        • kill()=>sigqueue() (I have POSIX backing on this one!)
        • fork()=>spoon()
        • use=>request_one_nighter
        • truncate()=>spank()
        • split()=>divorce()
        Hopefully, my additions will be considered and incorporated in future releases of perl. I can only see them as beneficial to the Perl experience as a whole.

    Because most women don't hang out in a monastery to pick up cute guys? :)

    Seriously though, why do you you people think that females are so underrepresented in the IT field in general?

    A friend of mine (who happens to be a female) went to school to get an engineering degree. Of the two schools she attended, IIRC she was the only female engineering student that one of the colleges had ever seen, and was one of the first at the other school. She said the only thing that she disliked about the experience is that (and I'm paraphrasing, but nearly quoting) being treated like queen in that class got annoying after the first few semesters. Anyone wanting to give me a college experience that rough is welcome to begin bowing and throwing money at any time.

    And no, I don't own 27 pairs of sweatpants.
