Sometimes the place gets a little stuffy BrowserUk. And if you were to consult the appropriate chatter log youd see the answer is no i didn't get a rush of power. I didn't even think to restore it until theorbtwo pointed out that I in fact had the power to do so.

I respected your right to consider it for deletion, but in this case without any criticism of the consideration you made I felt it was appropriate to override it. Its not something im likely to do often, but I felt that in this case the node shouldn't have been deleted. From what ive seen in the chatter lots of monks here like cooking and frankly a little around-the-cooler banter here isnt totally out of place. The other thing is that I'm pretty sure that had a more established monk written a node in the appropriate tone on the same subject it wouldn't have been deleted. I mean he might not have quite touched the right tone but he at least made an effort.

Im really hopeful that the restore of this node wont get political. We dont need any more politics than we all already have in our lives and a little bit of light hearted stuff around here would help to keep the site lively.

Consider "the node which shall not be named". What difference is there between a node about why people chose their nickname and a node about what peoples favorite recipes are?

    Three points:

    1. On this basis, every single node that has ever been deleted on the basis of it being off topic should be forthwith reinstated.

For the record. I am not in favour of this.

    2. I thought that the main difference between the CB and other mechanisms for communication in this place, was that the CB was impermenant. Ie. Logs of it should not be kept.

If these exists, beyond the temporary life extension of cblast35, they shouldn't--at least as I understand it. And if they do exist, how is anyone without knowledge of their existance, meant to consult them.

This is the basis of my objection to the use of the CB as a mechanism for deciding site policy. You say that the gods were consulted prior to your reinstating the post--but how can this be verified?

    3. Your hope that this "...wont get political....", is, and should be, forelorn.

Any expression of power, as you expressed when you overode the (much lauded) consideration system, is, by it's very nature, political.

Effectively, it renders that system irrelevant and bogus.

You have, in that single, misconceived action, confirmed my expressed misgivings, that you decried as hurtful, that the administration of this place is arbitrary, capricious, and totally bankrupt as a societally-based ethical mechanism.

That's okay. There is no Monk's Charter, or Bill of Rights involved on this site--but the pretense that there is should now stop.

Can i just say that at the time of posting the reputation of the parent node is +5, but at the same time my XP has gone up by +10 which would lead me to take a guess of about 50-60 votes on this node. (Either that or i have been extremely lucky). I don't want to get mixed up in any politics on this site (or anywhere else for that matter). My suggestion though is that any off topic posts be placed entirely in <readmore> tags, with (OT) in the title, or even better, an off topic section is created for off topic posts. Of course, just my thoughts on the subject.

Please don't misunderstand me. I've have nothing against your post, or having a laugh. I am free to read, or ignore, any post or thread I choose, just as are others.

However, there is a historical precedent for considering nodes that are quite so blatently off topic as yours is, for deletion. Indeed, root posts where the topic has been very programming-related, but just not obviously perl-related have historically felt the swish of the nodereaper's scythe.

There has been recurrant discussion regarding the possibility of there being an Off-Topic section here so that those Monk's that prefer their daily Perl fix be unpolluted could easily ignore any such nodes; but this has been consistantly denied as a possibility. The general concensus being that this place should not fall into the quagmire of free-ranging anarchy that is slash dot and other places.

In general, I think that the current consideration mechanism works well, and under it and the historical precedent, your node would have, and was reaped at my (I think) legitimate instigation.

The only political aspect to the whole thing is whether some small subset (those around at any given time), of the already miniscule group of members here that are the gods and pmdevers, should take the decision to override the consideration mechanism and historical precedent--just because they can?

I contend that they should not, but I am, by choice, not a member of that cabal, so my choice is to highlight the matter and allow the 'process' to take it from there.

Just look at Past Polls, and you'll see that there regularily are threads about off-topic subjects... In fact, I would think that this subject (except for this subthread, which is ugly anywhere) would be an excellent topic for such a poll — except that a poll would'nt suffice, as it wouldn't exactly invite people to post recipes.
