Geographic query

Stegalex has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I have been asked to QUIKLY put some content together for my U.S. company's foreign travel portal. What I need to do is to ask a user where they are travelling to and based on their input (e.g. "Moscow, Russia") I need to present them with some relevant travel-related information such as:
  • airport codes
  • weather
  • U.S. Consulates/Embassies
  • currency conversion
  • hotels
  • per-diem rates
  • city guides
  • other relevant traveler information about the destination
Are there any Perl modules that can help me to lookup this information based on a city/country combination? I have been trawling around for xml/rss feeds for hours to no avail. My first thought was to plug into the Google API although I can't think of a way to pull in say relevant currency rates based on the city/country string. Thanks for your help and a Happy New Year to all!

Have a look at this thread about mapping and GIS that should have some relevant information.
