In that case, I have 8 words that match.

Examine what is said, not who speaks.

Love the truth but pardon error.

    BrowserUk,
Ok - let's have them. It would appear that my assumptions about the puzzle were likely wrong then. I assumed only 1 set of letters could be formed from the hints though multiple words might be able to be formed from the permutations of those letters. In this case, I can't think of 8 ways to arrange the letters 'h' 'o' 'u' 's' 'e' and not get non-sensical words.

One of those is a suspect word, but i think the others are valid words and meet the spec?

8 dukes house krems makes pokes smoke spade spoke

        BrowserUk,
Sorry - see the 3rd assumption.
The number of letters in common is the exact number of unique letters in common. A 't' would only be counted once even if it existed twice in both the mystery word and the hint word
        • dukes has 5 letters in common with dukes
        • krems has 3 letters in common with seams
        • makes has 3 letters in common with seams
        • pokes has 35 letters in common with pokes
I didn't finish the list as you can see you have a flaw in your code (which I am interested in seeing).

        Cheers - L~R
