Gaim's support for perl scripts is degrading rapidly

Bad News from http://gaim.sourceforge.net/:

Gaim's support for perl scripts is degrading rapidly. Parts of it work; parts of it don't work. There has been talk of removing support for perl scripts altogether in CVS HEAD. If you have the know-how to work with C/perl integration, the desire to contribute to an outstandingly sweet open source program, and the time to debug, fix and extend a perl plugin loader, we urge you to swing into action and help us out. I'd personally love to see a perl plugin that tests the full range of our perl scripting. Patches are always welcome (the smaller the better!)

Someone posted this bad news to a member of the german perl-community. I think it is important enough to repost it here.

Unfornatly, as far as I've ever been able to determine, gaim's perl support never did anything I really wanted it to do. In purticular, I would have loved, at various points, to be able to make GAIM protocols in perl. (Think of the CB in GAIM). Most other things that I've thought of doing with Gaim have big downpoints. (TTS with gaim: sounds bad, and can easily become very annoying.)

If I made a mistake, please let me know (such as by replying to this node).

9_9 - Well, you know what to do! :D

On a more serious note, it would be really sad if Perl support in any form went away from Gaim, it would be a good place to show off Perl, and I do know that there are lots of people here with the skills and more to fix this issue, if they want to.
