The Word from O'Reilly

After reading Fair Use When Referring to Book Answers? I dashed off an email to our friends at O'Reilly.

I would like to know what the O'Reilly position is on the re-use of co +de in your books. Specifically, I belong to an online community centered around the disc +ussion of Perl code: www.perlmonks.com, and wonder if it's acceptable use to + quote code from your Perl books as an answer to posted questions (assuming proper attr +ibution). I know that most members of perlmonks already own a majority of the Pe +rl books you publish (I have 5), so I doubt it would negatively impact sa +les. Is this fair use?

I received this response:

For you, comrade, it's fair use. Perl monks should feel free to use th +is code to answer posted questions. Frank Willison Editor-in-Chief O'Reilly & Associates

Thought you all might be interested.
Man....how cool is O'Reilly?

    Oh, how I love O'Reilly! Finally a company that understands common sense, puts out a quality product, and gives back to the community. If they didn't have their HQs in Sebastopol (yuk) I would want to work there.

      Their "other" headquarters is in Cambridge (MA). Or, you can be like Larry, and work for O'Reilly, and yet never leave the house.

      Why do you think you must be in Sebastopol? I've made 20% of my income for the past 10 years from checks that say O'Reilly, and have never set foot in the Sebastopol office! {grin}

        Cambridge is too far away from the Good Old Silicon Valley. As for working at home, I wouldn't want to do that....something enticing about a cube farm.
