Anybody ever check out Mister House? A very cool voice activated home automation program written entirely in perl. Same code runs on Win32 and Linux. It could certainly spice up the Christmas lights...

Indeed I have, and I have a MisterHouse box running at home. It has some drawbacks (IMHO it's not particularly well written, and it's certainly ill-documented), but Bruce has done a fine job of updating it frequently and he responds to suggestions very well.
