The Possum is a nocturnal and omnivorous marsupial. It is widely distributed in its native Australia and has been released into New Zealand.

Opossums are the only North American marsupials.

For those requiring a refresher course on their marsupialia (like myself), America Zoo has fairly detailed descriptions with pictures.

As to the cutest, I offer the Potoroo.

However, given the context of Perl6, perhaps the Tasmanian Devil is more apt, as my affinity for Perl5 has not yet been swayed by the Perl6 Synopses. Afterall, I imagine I'll have to transition to Perl6 at some point, which may be comparable to having my leg gnawed off (particularly with regard to white space prescriptions, ?? ::, et all).

Koala. I don't really see the connection with perl6, but a koala is so cute.

Quoting my wife (who is much more knowledgeable...): "Tasmanian tigers, or thylacines are probably no longer with us. ... There are some cryptozoologists who still seek it, and I wish them well in their search and admire their dedication."

For a cute marsupial that can chomp your leg off, I suggest the koaladile, which, curiously, already has a strong Perl connection (more than half of google hits for "koaladile" also mention Perl). I blame Schwern for proposing a new perl-qa slogan: "Koaladile is for Kwalitee" (Kah-wah-lah-dile is for Kah-wal-i-tee).

If fruit are allowed, why not a bactrian camel? I think another camel would provide a sense of continuity - twice the humps, but with the same noble spirit. Additionally, the humps could be read as representative of the new and old languages, which I hear are both to be available in the interpreter for the sake of backward compatibility. Marsupials are nice, but not traditionally employed as pack animals.

Because they are dangerous. As this documentary shows.

Don't forget the difficulty posed in differentiating the n.horribillis and the phascolarctos cinereus, which are, at first glance, morphologically similar, and that most classical texts still have not separated them.

"It burns us!"...next poll should be for the strongest, most fierous animal or somesuch. So I voted for the Thylacin Cynocephalus, cause it has Tiger in it's name (though it looks like a dog) and dogs are cute, right? ;).

Drat, I missed the duplication. Someone in the CB seemed to want more cuteness and a poll.

If you want a poll full of fierceness and violence, then you should probably just invest the effort and write one. I'm sure you can construct one around an exhaustive list of martial arts, for example. :)

I like only koala to assign for perl6. It's koala too cute :).

A koala bear is probably one of the most docile and cuddly animals on earth.

Its easy to understand why so many people love koala bears. A koala is so timid and trusting, unlike any other animal I can think of.

"timid and trusting" - Ha! Very territorial, and quite viscious in defending their 'turf' - whatever they define that to be. For example: this report, quoting an article from the Brisbane Courier Mail. Not to mention the whole urinating on a politician thing. I guess they have taste, at least.

And this is quite aside from the matter that they are related to the well-known descendents of the arboreal pouncer, thylacoleo (misleadingly known as the Marsupial Lion), which still cause problems in forrested areas (cf articles by B.Felsche re "nocturna horribillus").

With limited choice, I'd vote for the Tasmanian Tiger, 'coz releasing Perl6 looks like an enterprise comparable in scope with the ressurection of the tiger from broken DNA pieces :)

I believe Jackalopes are marsupial. Well at least they stand on their hind legs.

Alas, no. Jackalopes are rodentia, and are most closely related to the wolpertinger of Bavaria, although the wolpertinger is winged, whereas the Jackalope is not.

As an aside to the decidedly cryptozoological bent I have been demonstrating, the Jackalope and the wolpertinger both have some basis in fact, as hares and rabbits can develop viral bone tumors in their skulls, which manifest as apparent horns! Just goes to show, non?
