Try looking at it from the other side. What's in it for them that they don't "own" the code? It will depend a lot on what the code is going to do. If it's for instance, a piece of code to have an in-house application talk to some obscure database, they might not care you still own the code, and reuse (parts) of it. OTOH, if you're going to write a piece of software for a new company, whose business plan is based on selling/using a unique piece of software, and attracting many, or high paying customers that way, then having exclusive rights to the software is far more important. It doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money to produce software, and have that software be cheaply purchased by a competitor.
