My favorite descriptive name is:
$ascalar or $scalaro, %hasho, @arrayo;

for loop counters i like to use: $ix, $ixx, $ixa, $nix, $mix

or in strongly typed languages, like java, i like to use:

Dialog dialogo = new Dialog();
String stringy = new String();
TextArea descriptivenameTA = new TextArea();
and my favorite, Menu m = new Menu();
