It's just a jump to the left!

It's around a corner. But most people go mad trying to comprehend the corner.

I am reminded of the Dutch phrase "Om de hoek", which means around the corner, but sometimes gets miss-translated as "On the corner".

The phrase also has some of the same connotations of the English phrase "Round the bend".

Update: Thanks aukjan for pointing out my typo.

That is "Om de hoek" ... 'der' is tooooo German ;-)

It depends in which "worldly" context you view this question:

  • "The Real World" : The absolute path between keyboard and server location.
  • "Networking World" : Add the length of all transports used to transfer my keystrokes from my keyboard to the server, with the least amount of hops.
  • "Emotional World" : The distance from the keyboard to my heart.

I guess "Through a wormhole" most accurately describes accessing PM through my corporate firewall ;).

Wouldn't that be "through the valley of the shadow of death"? ;)

I see no option for "through my coffee cup". :(

If you mean something like "Through the Looking Glass" then I totally understand.

Zeno's paradox becomes all the more perplexing in the world of Perl. The infinite number of infinitesimally small distances converges to 1. (I used the ratio test to figure that out. I couldn't use the root test too effectively since there weren't any exponents involved.) So I voted for that, and so far I'm with the majority. A quantum leap makes some sense, but I don't know the wavefunction of Perl, let alone its Hamiltonian. The product of the position and momentum changes when I click on this site happens to be MUCH larger than h-bar. Maybe Perl exists in infinite-dimensional Hilbert space... I'd add something about that to our voting options. Or better yet, the shortest distance might only be found by using the Kronecker delta. -100104

What is a rhump line ???
My dictionary answers "Isoazimutallinie", what just adds +∞ to my confusion...
      All~

A rhumb line is used for nautical navigation. It can be difficult to follow a great circle as the heading of one constantly changes. Thus to go between to nearby points on the world one often uses a rhumbline. Essentially you figure out the initial heading that puts you to toward the point you wish to go to and follow a constant heading, you will take a rhumb line.

Rhumb lines form a spiral to the nearest poll (unless your heading is 0). The advantage to having a constant heading is that it is easy to hold a constant heading in a control loop, wheras controlling on a great circle requires much more math.

I really thought you were making a joke about the poll ideas quest here. Imagine how disappointed I was when it was a spelling error.

But thanks for the information -- you learn something new every day around here.

Maybe it's supposed to be "a rhumba line"

What I do is, I figure out how long I have to get there and how far it is, and I make sure I'm on track to be on time by making sure that I've gone half the distance by the time half of the time elapses. Then I go half the remaining distance in half the remaining time, and so on, until I'm there.
