Perl Mailing List

eastcoastcoder has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Could someone recommend a general Perl programming mailing list? The collection at lists.cpan.org is so specific - I'm looking for a mailing list for general Perl discussion, questions, and answers.

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

In my not-so-humble opinion, I think you just found one. Technically, this isn't a mailing list - you can't just email to a server to send it to everyone. But since the desired purpose is "general Perl discussion, questions, and answers" and the purpose of this website is basically the same, I think it works out just as well.

    Welcome - join in. It's fun. :-)

Right on, I was just looking for mailling list format. Speaking of that, is here available in that format, by any chance?

You might want to try comp.lang.perl.misc, or just go to Google and search their groups. Once you find some groups, you can probably access them through NNTP.

If you like very busy mailing lists, you can try subscribing to London.pm's mailing list, or to the Perl Beginners mailing list, which despite the name gets a fair share of medium level questions.
For a much more sedate mailing list, you can try Israel.pm's mailing list, which currently gets only a few mails per week.

As someone else pointed out, there are many groups listed on pm.org. However not all are active (in fact a good share are not active at all) and from those that are, not all are in English (both London.pm and Israel.pm are English only).
Maybe other people will now give links to other active, English langauge mailing lists of other user groups. It's up to you to decide which you want to subscribe to. However I don't think there is lack of choice...

It's worth pointing out that many (maybe even most) Perl Mongers mailing lists are predominantly social lists. Whilst very few of them actually consider Perl questions to be off-topic[1], you'll often come across a _lot_ of non-Perl chatter on a Perl Mongers mailing list.

[1] Tho' NY.pm comes to mind.
