Ultimately all my code revolves around the regex

/(.{$min,}).*\1/gi

I realize that the regex is the rate limiting step in this process. Of course $min is necessary because allowing regex to look for all matches is prohibitive. Being ignorant of the subtleties of perl I don't know if there are other ways to effectively match substrings.
