perlmonk.org Out(r)age Issues

As some of you may have noticed, this morning jcwren's perlmonk.org server went down.

For the second time in recent memory, perlmonk.org spontaneously declared its filesystem to be read-only, most likely due to physical disk errors. Unfortunately this time, despite the RO filesystem passing fsck before the restart, rebooting didn't fix the problem. Our best guess, at this point, is that the hard drive is failing.

This evening it should be possible to have someone power cycle the machine. If that does not work, jc will attempt to get to the server later this week for hands-on troubleshooting. Whatever the case, if you are a perlmonk.org user you'll want to back up your data immediately when next you find the server up. While there is a slight chance that the data will be irrecoverable, every effort will be made to restore the system to its former... er... glory as soon as possible. ;-)

FYI, I'm coordinating with jc to get a backup of everything if possible. And from here out, I'll have it set up for a regular backup cycle. Same goes if perlmonk.org has to start again from scratch. `mhoward - at - hattmoward.org`	[reply]

Irrecoverable data? Noooooooooo!!!!!!! If I have a few folders on a machine (such as perlmonk.org), is there a best method for backing up the data remotely? You can tell I don't use *nix much :) (Obviously I can go in manually and ftp the data out, but I have a feeling there is a cleaner way of doing this.) Thanks, smitz	[reply]

smitz, rsync is a wonderful utility to achieve such. ~~I do not know if perlmonk.org supports it though, or the machine you want to backup to. They have to be running a rsync deamon at their eind (iirc).~~ Good luck, Detonite	[reply]

You don't really need an rsync daemon. You can rsync via ssh or shudder rsh.	[reply]

Hey, my recent post here was mostly inspired by the original post in this thread. I'd like to help get a good disk for PM. Is PM only one server or many? Does it or do they have hardware needs (like, would a RAID make PM more snappy)? Who normally pays for PM hardware upgrades? Can I send that person/people a wad/wads of unmarked bills? Can I urge others to do likewise?	[reply]

Perlmonk.org is a server run by jcwren for the benefit of perl monks, but it's not part of perlmonks.org. The server that you're reading this from is hosted at Pair networks, and it's likely well-equipped. I get the feeling that you may be confusing the two. `mhoward - at - hattmoward.org`	[reply]
