STONEY TANGAWIZI

    Jambo! (hello!)
Stoney Tangawizi is a product of the Coca-Cola company. Tangawizi is the swahili word for Ginger. In Kenya it is served in 300 ml. bottles and in Tanzania in 350 ml. bottles. Another interesting Tangawizi fact is that in Kenya it is commonly refered to as "a stoney". In Tanzania it is refered to as "Tangawizi". Have any questions about Stoney Tangawizi? Kenya or Tanzania? Please e-mail me. I am always glad to share my love and knowlege of East Africa. I am currently trying to import a case of this great soda, any suggestions of how to obtain some? email redacted
    La la sa lama.(good night)

        Hi!

I was just searching the Internet for "Tangawizi", when I first came to this site and then found another you might want to check out:

        http://swahilicoast.com/swahili_recipes4.htm

It tells you how to "brew" your own Tangawizi - I didn't try it yet, but I definitely will...

As I think "Stoney" has a touch of "Sprite", another thing worth trying would be to add ginger extract to "Sprite".

I hope I could be of any help,

        Martin, Germany

I am not sure what goes into Stoney Tangawizi. I still have not been able to find any in the States.
I had some of this wonderful beverage in Nimule, South Sudan! I want to find some in the states. Someone told me that a friend found and ordered some but it came in cans and did not taste as good - had a metallic taste to it. I really want to find and have some shipped to me in the bottles!

Whoever said tangawizi wasn't the swahili word for giner doesn't know swahili. I lived 10 years in Kenya and East Africa and Tangawizi is standard for ginger. They even have Kahawa ya tangawizi which is a hot ginger drink. Much like hot cider. Don't comment with facts unless you really know the facts.
Yes, Stoney is made by Coca-Cola, but Coke doesn't sell it in the U.S. HOWEVER, if any of you Stoney lovers are near Atlanta, you can get a Stoney fix in the tasting room of the new Coke museum. I tried to convince them they should sell me some...but no luck. I had to be satisfied with drinking three straight glasses of it there.
I want some too. I went to World of Coke yesterday and Stoney is one of the best products they make. Bring it to the U.S.!!
Yes PLEEAASSEEE!!!! I'm in Georgia, U.S. I want a case of Stoney. Anyone have an African friend? Email me lucyashley@rock.com
I am thankful for all this information. I first tasted it at the Coke Museum then traveled to Tanzania and drank as much as I could. Wikipedia mentions . . . Stewart's Ginger Beer is a similar soft drink that is sold in the United States. If anyone finds a way to get this to the states, please count me in for a case or two!!!
The South African version of Stoney is sold at Jungle Jim's Supermarket in Fairfield, Ohio. It'll cost you, though. If I recall correctly it was around $1.69 for a can!
Hello! I come to this side with google... I'm still back from kenya now and I miss Tangawizi so much! Hmm, my english is terrible, sorry .... but is there any chance to get tangawizi-stoney here in germany? Can I order it in Kenya (Mombasa) ?? Anyone a idea???? Thx and many longing greetings (about Kenya) :-)) Eve eve_lyn1963.yahoo.com
can send u some stoney from kenya!!! khayega@yahoo.co.uk
Jambo (hello) I was a missionary in Kenya, I really loved tangawizi stoney and would love to find it in American. Maybe we could ask Coke to bring it to the world and use cane suger NOT corn syrup which is bad for people. Cane suger has a much better flavor which Coka cola uses in soda in Kenya. Missionary Alice
Thanks for all the suggestions for substitutes above. I just got two bottles from a friend who went to Tanzania and I'm gonna buy a bunch of Ginger beers before I open them and do a taste test to find the closest. I did as a lot of people and called coke asking them to sell in this country and they declined.
Tangawizi does mean ginger. I was in Uganda recently and i asked the man who ran the organization that brought my team and I there and he told me that tangawizi is kiswahili for ginger. I love stoney, though, and would love to find it here in the states.
hate to tell u guys im a big fan of tangawizi but the word "tangawizi" doesn't mean ginger they got the name from the town Tanga just above Dar and Wizi means thief so i dont know how u got ginger but no worries kwahali
        Anonymous Monk,
While I don't speak Swahili, I do know how to use http://www.google.com. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence to suggest tangawizi does mean ginger. I am not suggesting that is where the name for the drink came from but obviously you should fact check better.

        Cheers - L~R

        Also... It's kwahari. ;-)
I found a similar drink called ginger beer in San Diego. Had Stoney in Kenya years ago and loved it. This is almost as good. Comes from Reeds in LA
been a fan of Stoney since '05. i live on the west coast in San Francisco and nothing out here. i have been on the search forever...tried out of africa, and the cans that i received didn't actually taste like i remembered it... the hunt continued...tried many. Yesterday, went to see if anything at Beverages and More had any after 4th of july sales. found Baritts Bermuda Stone Ginger Beer in a bottle. it said 'stone' and i went for it. stuck it in the fridge.... waited all day, hopeful. tried it tonight. .... i think i found it! they've been making it since 1874. i seriously think i found the closest replica! someone who has fresher taste buds to the taste of Stoney has got to confirm with me!!
http://www.outofafricatrading.com/products.asp?subcategoryID=06 Haven't ordered yet, but I intend to.
i have ordered the cans from outofafrica and to me the cans definitely have a different taste then the bottles if my tastebuds recall. today, i happened to be at an organic store in berkeley and they also had the Barritts Ginger Beer in the store. (I'm the one that recommended it a post or two above....and over a year ago...) I tried it a second time... it brought me back to Africa AGAIN!! someone who has had Stoney Tangawizi recently NEEEDS to confirm this for me. It is unlike any of the ginger beverages out there and i feel it has that distinctive taste of "Stoney-T" !!
mimi ninapenda stoney!!! ("i love stoney!")
        me too
        Mimi pia!!!
Hi, The guy I am seeing is from South Africa and he loves stoney ginger beer from coke too. I looked all over and finally found a site that sells it. http://www.outofafricatrading.com/ it is 9.95 for a 6 pack and then there is a 10 dollar shipping fee. It is somewhat expensive, but it was the only place I could find it. Their represenatives were very nice. If you happen to find a better place please let me know.
Does anyone know where I can get Stoney in England? I got addicted to it while I was in Zanzibar. Asante! :)
I have a question. Is there in fact any ginger in Stoney's? It is my favourite drink too I drink it all the time. I was wondering but it doesn't mention ginger root in the ingredients, just 'flavourant'. I was browsing the internet and stumbled on this feed.

The closest thing in the US is probably Vernors.
