Tk804 on 64bit Linux

monk2b has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I have successfully built Tk on linux computers for years. I recently began to get 64 bit Linux desktop system in and the users of these systems require Tk-804.27 for the applications that they develope. I have not been able to get Tk built on a 64 bit system to date.

Does anyone know of a problem with building Tk on a 64 bit Intel pentium 4 system? Are there any obvious gotchas that anyone knows about that I should be aware of? Is there a 64 bit version of the Tk module?

I would appreciate any help that I get.

I got 99 problems, but coding ain't one.

    Hi Monk2b,

You're really asking the wrong crowd for building TK. You're best bet is to go to the TCL Developer Site and/or to the website of your Linux distribution.

Unless you're talking about the Perl/TK module??

    hope this helps :)

It would help if you gave the error messages you are getting. Also going to http://groups.google.com and searching for "Perl Tk 64 bit compiling" gives some results from recent discussions on the newsgroup comp.lang.perl.tk about 64 bit on different platforms.

You also can get a 64 bit linux distribution which comes with pre-built Tk binaries, and get their source rpms, and see what patches they've applied to the Tk source, and the compilers. OpenSuSE usually does a good job of making sure everything works.
