I'd add that you also need to know what constitutes a section/chapter title, both for centering and building your TOC.
I'd suggest regular expressions for this -- look at what's common on all the chapters of interest. Regular expressions will also likely be helpful in other parts of your task . . . And, you should look at printf/sprintf. Good luck!
