Playing around with some code for this, there are often multiple ways in which differences could be merged. For example, from your test above:
To me, these are both equally legitimate, but is there any criteria upon which the one could be determined to be preferrable to the other? Examine what is said, not who speaks -- Silence betokens consent -- Love the truth but pardon error.
