I saw a lot of that in my first job at a large research lab in the US (at least, from folks who didn't spend a lot of time around concentrated acids and what have you). Since moving to industry, it's much rarer, but not uncommon. Then again, my kids wear Crocs and socks, which seems to be a bit more trendy...
