Perl Goodies on OS X

Today I had the pleasure of playing with Mac OS X for the first time. It's a modern-looking, intuitive operating system with many aesthetically pleasing features, and should appease most of the current Mac user base while making the OS much more usable, stable, and even friendlier to learn.

The part that I liked best, however, was not the eye candy, however sweet. I pulled up a terminal window (tcsh!) to poke around a bit...

=P

It's going to be shipping in the default installation, I guess, which means that Perl will now be available on every new Mac purchased after June this year. This is good news. ;-)

I'm not quite sure how CPAN will work, of course, but I assume that since OS X is based upon BSD code, there should be no problems making most modules work. I am a bit concerned about TK, simply because X apps may require third-party apps to run, but overall, I get a warm feeling knowing that the world is going to see many more Perl installations, very soon.

I installed some CPAN modules on my OS X box this afternoon without any problems. I had installed the Developer Tools pack that came with OS X, so that I had a gcc around. Don't konw if CPAN needed that, but I'm guessing it would. My next step is trying to compile MySQL on it. This will rock, being able to develop perl aps on my desktop!
