OT: Any monks play go?

by amarquis (Curate)

The game of go (http://senseis.xmp.net/?Go) seems to be a fairly big hit with the math/computer crowd, so I figure there must me some monks in the woodwork that play.

So, I'm posting my go server usernames in the hopes of catching some games with other monks. Perhaps others could do the same and we can maintain a list here?

Dragon Go Server (http://www.dragongoserver.net/) a_marquis
Kiseido Go Server (http://www.gokgs.com/) amarquis
I was 4 kyu AGA before I took a two year break, I seem to be playing around 7-8 kyu KGS nowadays.

I enjoy playing, but don't get to play very often. I think I'll get onto dragongoserver and get into a postal game. :-)

    My criteria for good software:
    1. Does it work?
    2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
Re: Any monks play go? (No, but I play chess variants)

I play chess variants at Brainking. I am princepawn there... I got bored of Go. I never got very good at it. I enjoyed correspondence Go at Dragon Go Server quite a bit.

I play semi-actively on KGS as samtregar, usually in the late evening eastern time. I'm 3k right now, peeked at 2k several months ago. If you see me online feel free to offer a game.

How did you get so good at Go? What's the magic trick? And how long did it take you?
It's taken me a really long time - around 6 years now I think. I reached 7k pretty fast, maybe 2 years in. Every rank after that has come very slowly. It seems like just about everyone I talk to has gotten better faster than I have, so you may not want to take my advice too seriously.

I read a lot of Go books, some help, some don't. I think the most helpful was Janice Kim's 5 book learn-to-play-go series.

I also read lots of game reviews from the Go Teaching Ladder, and do some reviews myself.

I try to play in tournaments whenever I can. I'm a very competitive person, so knowing there's a tournament coming up really gets me in the mood to read and practice.

Oh, and play a lot! I try to play every day, mostly fast games on KGS.

I use EnragedTux on both KGS and dragongoserver. I am about 10K on KGS.

I am working on writing a SGF Parser(though not ment to be go specific), Games-SGF
