DONT TREAD ON ME

District of Columbia et al. v. Heller. For all you grammer-nazis: The Gadsden Flag (from which the above phrase comes) does not have an apostrophe in the word "don't".

Bio

I'm orriginally from a small town in Northern Wisconsin (which I firmly believe should be its own state along with the UP and North Eastern Minnesota) called Haugen. I'm a senior at UW Madison, majoring in Zoology and Biology. I'm hoping to get into bioinformatics progamming. I hunt, fish, play rugby, and write code for fun. I have about a year left here at UW, and I try to get up North as often as I can to escape the city and the noise and get back to my roots.

Saints in MY Book

Whatever you did/said may not have seemed like a lot to you at the time, but it meant a lot to me. Thank you, I appreaciate it.

Learn From My Mistakes

  • Problems With Tab Delimited Files, My first post, and I screwed up big time. A good example of how not to conduct yourself, and how little things can get blown out of proportion.
  • ASCII Checkers, Originally posted in the Code Catacombs, a no-no and very kinda bad a learning experience. Will beWas moved to Cool Uses For Perl. Thanks, Arunbear and Corion.

My Suggestions For Other Newbies

  • Don't take anything personally... unless it is. But it isn't. (If you're not sure whether the remark was a personal attack against you, it probably wasn't.) In the extremely rare case that someone was intentionally malicious , don't be afraid to stand up for yourself, but don't feed the trolls or start a flame-war! Take the high road, be polite, and walk away. In general, the monks are friendly and willing to help.
  • Don't be afraid to contribute, but make sure your posts are well informed. Read everything you can. If you're not sure about a post (if you're a newbie, you're probably not sure, even if you think you are)... post to your scratchpad first and ask for input in the chatterbox (thanks, Corion).
  • You will make a few mistakes and step on a few toes. As long as no harm was intended, it usually isn't a big deal around the monastery. The janitors do a great job, but try not to give them extra work, eh? Following the above suggestions will minimize this, though.
  • When you're no longer a newbie, remember what it was like to be a newbie.
  • Enjoy your time at the Monastery.

Stuff on My Plate

  • School: I'm majoring in Biological Aspects of Conservation and Zoology and will be graduating in May of 2009. As of 14 December, 2008 I have 18 credits to go and I'm on vacation until 20 January 2009. It's Perl time.
  • Work: On a weekly basis I download and verify radio telemetric data from tagged blue sucker, lake sturgeon, shovelnose sturgeon, and paddlefish and check recieving equipment at a hydroelectric dam on the Wisconsin River by Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin as part of a study to determine the apropriate placement of a fishway.
  • I'm working on writing a portable fish bioenergetics program based on and compatalbe with a fish bioenergetics modeling program developed at UW Madison, Fish Bioenergetics 3.0. I like fish. A lot.
  • Life in general
