which perl ide should i use ... or how to setup emacs for perl dev

cutlass2006 has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I see others have queried about what ide to use with perl.

Without wanting to sound too presumptuous, I fully expect the answer to be 'emacs' .... though my mind is open to any and all suggestions.

For those of the emacs persuasion, is there any top tips, dotfiles, tutorials/links (up to date) or extensions (like this) that they would recommend ?

update I was surprised by this ..... there are much more perl people using vi then I imagined!

Definitely read the EmacsWiki page and follow up on the links. The best setup for you will depend on your preferred development style.

You could try out Devel::PerlySense and see what you think.

Also, take a look at the Shell Archive for some cool Emacs tricks, especially prove.el (mode for highlighting and folding test run output), and project-root (to run things from the correct root directory).

I used to be an emacs user, but I switched to vim quite a while ago; in fact now I can barley manage to get around in emacs if I start it up.

Of course, vim by itself, while nice, doesn't meet all my needs. I also make use of grep to search through whatever project I'm working on, and sed and awk/gawk to make changes across multiple files.

I've been meaning to try padre, but there were some dependency issues when I tried to install and I haven't gotten around to figuring things out.

I've used Eclipse with the EPIC plugin for years. It's a great IDE that looks the part, is very fast ( faster then ActiveState's Komodo ) and very easy to use.
