If you are having problems because lone apostrophes () confuse Perl mode, add a # at the end of the offending line. That helps a lot.

    a) that was pretty much the entire documentation I managed to find on perl-mode
    b) for a lot of unsubstantiated claims like 'cperl-mode is so much better than perl-mode, tbh I was expecting worse problems, and ones that couldn't be fixed, albeit with a slightly unsightly hack...
