in reply to When it comes to wine, I prefer…

I prefer beer (real ale, Guiness or Newcastle Brown), but if I have to drink wine, I prefer it chilled - whether white or (draws huge breath) red.

To my mind, drinking real ale, Newcastle Brown or red wine at room temperature ought to be banned under the Geneva convention :D

A user level that continues to overstate my experience :-))

Actually chilling your red wine is the right way to drink it. It should be drunk at "room temperature" which was defined before the time of central heating and was probably more like between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. Not our present 22+ degrees Celsius.

Chilled real ale? No, no, no. Cellar temperature, slightly below room temperature. But not chilled. Never chilled.

Btw, there hasn't been any naturally conditioned Guinness (bottle or cask) for many years, anywhere, even Dublin (where sales are falling). Pasteurised (killed) and injected with nitrogen, I hate the stuff.

If anyone tells you that they like a certain pub because "they serve a nice pint of Guinness" then you know they don't know what they are talking about. It is all the same, Diageo ("the world’s biggest drinks group") has spent a lot of money making it that way. Weep.

    Nationalise the breweries!

Well, National was pretty good in Maryland, but the original brewer is gone....

"The Dog" "Broon" "Newkie", Newcastle Brown Ale.

the beer is actually a mixture of two ales - a stronger, dark brew and a lighter blend.

It's certainly well known, and a glass of 'Newkie Broon' goes down nicely if it's ice-cold and carefully poured so that the glass is always half full.

Indeed the makers of Newcastle Brown Ale are so concerned about the temperature their beer was served at that a heat-sensitive blue star is placed on the back label which changes colour with the temperature.

Newcastle Brown Ale is a serious business...

You mean your t-shirt becomes invisible at the wrong temperature? Interesting...

Trust me. "Room temperature" red wine in the heat of Israeli summer (30-40C) is not something you want to drink.

    Best, beth
