Fixed width or wrapping gates

Hello Fellow Monks

Upon visiting perlmonks today I was greeted with a very wide html page. I estimate around 3500 pixels wide or roughly 2x my wide screen width and then some. The cause was a chain of compiler flags quoted inside code tags in Net::Pcap + Solaris10 x86 : runtime error madness

The wideness of the main column puts the navigation links so far off that the site becomes bothersome to use, at least until I click on a link which takes me away from the monastery gates.

I hereby propose that in the case of code tags (pre, blockquote, etc) they either be placed into scrollable boxes, wordwrapped or overflow their divs. At least on the monastery gates so that one sour apple don't spoil the bunch.

Ps.It is not the first time I have experienced this. I haven't set up any free nodelets or custom style sheet so it might be considered my own fault by some, but I would rather not have to.

Rather than sort through a bunch of replies with one or two possible pieces of the puzzle, just go to the site documentation for this specific problem: Why is the PerlMonks page too wide?.

Could it be that you have Code Wrapping Off enabled in your Display Settings?

The code appears wrapped for me also.

Ps.It is not the first time I have experienced this. I haven't set up any free nodelets or custom style sheet so it might be considered my own fault by some, but I would rather not have to.

But you did go to Display Settings and select "Code Wrapping Off". So if you want wrapping, all you have to do is reverse your disabling of wrapping.

I cannot recall ever doing so, but it seems I must have.

I hate it when that happens. I don't know what it is about the "gates" page, because I don't have an issue with other pages. Yes, I have code wrapping, and see red "+" marks when it happens.

Perhaps it is a bug in the Monastery Gates in particular.
