Changelog Node?

by princepawn (Parson)

It would be nice if there were a "ChangeLog" node that gave a description of the latest features and their usage.

I didn't know about the Message Inbox feature, but if there were a "ChangeLog" node or something of that sort, then would have known.

Vroom's pretty good about announcing new features. For example, I used super search to locate nodes by him containing the word "new" in their titles and found his announcement rather quickly. Granted, it's near the bottom of the list (since super search orders by post date)[1]. A similar simple search returns the same link a little more quickly.

Constraining the same search to dates between January 1, 2001 and today reveals it even more quickly.

Also, certain helper elves have been known to post nodes outlining changes when Fearless forgets to. Consider, for example, this post.

Additionally, turnstep has been quietly maintaining his home node to outline new features, commonly asked questions, and (in)frequently posted suggestions. I've found that a very good summary of the broader changes to the Monastery. You might consider checking it out.

Finally, I'm not completely sure we want to full document all changes. For example, many things have been added in recent months to make life easier on vroom. For example, the janitors have been announced and given powers to help clean things up and limit trollish incursions. Documenting all of these changes could forewarn the trollish and lead to more inventive attacks. Dealing with these would take time away from our real mission: helping each other learn Perl.

I can see how this might help, of course, but given that we often encourage people to help themselves, it doesn't seem unreasonable to expect a little work on the part of the curious.

In short, it's not a bad idea, but we already have tools available for identifying new features designed to be publicized. I'm not necessarily disagreeing that it would be helpful, but I can think of other changes I'd like to see implemented first. (For two simple examples, see the following footnote.)

Footnote 1: It would certainly be nice to be able to 1) sort the results of Super Search and to 2) directly link to the results of a super search. Note that both ideas have been suggested before.

(Ovid changelog Wiki?) Re: Changelog Node?

This would be a great thing to use our Wikis for! Wikis are a feature that we have been experimenting with, but, as of this writing, I do not believe that they have been fully implemented.

Currently, I know of the following wikis here:

Wiki's are useful for keeping general knowledge as they can be updated at will be several people and don't require multiple nodes to be read to follow the entire discussion.

Unfortunately, most monks will only be able to view the first wiki, but it gives you an idea how they can be used to handle information of this sort.

You can also follow this link about wikis for more information.

In general, I'd like to see some list of 'special' nodes that are available to the public (eg non-gods). A partial list is in this node about PM display issues, but I'm sure there are more. As some of the more useful nodes like Message Inbox, Best Nodes, and Super Search are not directly linked by the front page or commonly-visited nodes, one can tend to forget about them.

And yes, a changelog node would also be a nice thing to have, at least as to find new features that wouldn't necessarily be a special node (eg the latest Google thing).

It sure would be handy, but I've found that half the fun of new nodes are trying to find them yourself.

I remember when I first signed on and people would make references to Best Nodes or Worst Nodes, and I'd say to myslef "What the hell????" and have some good clean (for a change =) fun trying to track them down. Which of course, led me to try and track more down and find some good stuff in the proccess.
