Strange error in using CPAN: AUGMAKE meta target -- SOLVED (kind of)

CountZero has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Perl,

I was updating my Perl installation, when I encountered the following error in CPAN:

Writing Makefile for Text::CSV_XS

dmake.exe: makefile: line 454: Error: -- An AUGMAKE meta target must not be mixed with non AUGMAKE meta targets, offending target [.manifest]

I had similar errors when upgrading Moose and Class::MOP

Not being conversant with the arcane internals of make, I am at a loss how to solve this problem.

I am using ActiveState Perl 5.10.1 and dmake.exe as the make-tool. OS is Windows XP Pro.

I'm quite sure I have done upgrades of all these modules before without any problems.

Update: I tried all your suggestions, updated everything to the latest and the greatest and still the same problem remained. Then I noticed that the buffer for previous commands in cpan no longer worked and that ANSI-codes in the CLI were not working either. So something is definitetly hosed in my Perl-installation. I have re-installed my Activestate Perl and now it works again. Thanks all for your assistance!

Most of the modules are current on the PPM sites 5.10. I too have had problems generating some modules on Win32.I am using dmake/mingw. Please check your 'make' and 'cc' (compiler) setting:

    perl -V:cc -V:make

to be sure that they are correct. The perl MakeFile.pl keys on these and other values to build the Makefile.

    I was able to make/make test OK Text:CSV_XS 0.72 using ActiveState 5.10.1 1006 on VISTA SP3.

Lastly, you may wish to be sure that the folder/directory that the tar file was extracted into was empty.

    Good luck. -c

If necessary I use ppm, but as I have a minicpan on the harddisk of my laptop, I tend to use cpan first, especially when I am on the road and may not have a reliable connection to the internet.

Can't reproduce the error, either. If none of the suggestions already provided have helped, then we problably need to see perl -v, dmake -V and the version of ExtUtils::MakeMaker.

    Cheers,

    ppm upgrade MinGW dmake
While you're at it, upgrade ExtUtils::MakeMaker
