All about PerlMonks' usernames

On a whim I decided to put together all of the threads that I could find on usernames used here on PerlMonks. There was a little duplication of topics, so why not just have a clearinghouse of all threads about the subject?

The first place to go to read about usernames is Create A New User. There are two threads about username length limits: Username limits and Username length limit. There are two threads about white space in usernames: Erraticate usernames with white space and Forged usernames!. The are two threads about changing usernames Username Changing and Can I change my username?. Curiosity on some new usernames is a thread about spam usernames, and Forged usernames! is also about forged usernames. Name Space is about what users' usernames mean and from wence they came with the My username is... poll to also let us know why a username was chosen.

If I missed a thread or three, please let me know. I was also on the fence about the spelling of username, is it one word or two? :)

Have a nice day!

    Are you going to put together something for PerlMonks FAQ? It seems that over the years a lot of people have had questions... might be good to have somewhere to point them?

    Just a something something...

      I think that the SiteDocClan have it pretty much under control. Creating an account on PerlMonks, Choosing a username, and Can I change my username? are pretty much all inclusive. I don't want to reinvent the wheel here (or is it already too late?). Certain things could be added to the current FAQs such as "After you create your account and choose your username, why don't you tell us why you chose that username?" then direct the new user to Name Space and/or My username is....

      The problem in Forged usernames! seems to have been handled in Choosing a username with the rule "names cannot begin with space or underscore." Other ways to forge usernames might come up, so maybe add a link to that thread somewhere in the current FAQs or information on how to remedy the situation. New users might not know about going to the gods. The same link could be used to report spam accounts such as those mentioned in Curiosity on some new usernames.

      On username restrictions, I would include names of core modules to the "reserved" list. I don't know if it would happen, but someone might like a module so much that the person could choose it as a username such as "CGI" or "List::Util."

      I do have one wish, that my username would be displayed with a space instead of the underscore, but that is just cosmetic.

      my $username = "Lady_Aleena; my $display_name = "Lady Aleena"; my @abbreviations = qw(LA Al L_A);

      :)

      Have a cookie and a very nice day!

        Agreed! - I just meant that if you are gathering these thoughts, it would be good to put them in a form that can be patched in to the existing FAQs by the powers that be? Always a pain to update Docs, so I am sure they would appreciate!
