    Matt Foley: Now, young man, what do you want to do with your life?
    Brian: (nervous) I.. actually, Matt.. I kinda wanna be a perl programmer..
    Matt Foley: We-e-e-elll.. la-de-freakin'-da! We've got ourselves a programmer here! ( jumps across the room ) Hey, Dad, I can't see real good.. ( lifts his glasses off and on his face ) ..is that Larry Wall over there?
    Dad: Well, actually, Matt.. Ellen and I have encouraged Brian in his programming.
    Matt Foley: Dad, I wish you could just shut your big yapper! ( stumbles back across the room ) Now, I wonder.. Brian, from what I've heard, you're using your ORA books, not for "Learning Perl Programming", but for rolling doobies!! You're gonna be doing a lot of doobie-rolling when you're living in a van down by the river!

    I could have done better, but I just wanted to do it...

    Man, I can't believe there wasn't an option for 'In a houseboat anchored in the middle of the lake, with a 1.5Mbps satellite link, and 5 cases of beer'.

    Missing options

  • Home
  • Coffee shop
  • Middle of the desert with a satellite link
  • In a broom closet so the boss can't see
  • With Cowboy Neal
  • I'm at home with a kitten on my lap while typing this.

Er, home

    <wank>

    Why was there no option for those people who are good enough to have a job where they can hack all the Perl they like from home (or the park, or a coffee shop in Amsterdam, or...)?

    </wank>
      I suppose they'd rather not be singled out for abuse from the rest of us ;)
      Amen - that's what I do :)
      ...I think the "van down by the river" option was for us. In fact, I was actually recently caught sending an update to a CGI script from a Penske rental truck, using a cell phone to get a net connection while passing through Memphis in the rain. Who needs fuel oil and fertilizer anyway? Guns and explosives are the munitions of the past. It's knowledge that counts now. Knowledge and connectivity. Van by the river works well for that! Have fun. ---v

    ...a small open-plan office in a 240-year-old building, looking out over glorious, sunny St James's Park, London. Unfortunately, I'm sitting in front of a Windows box. Ah well, you can't have everything. Call me a heretic, but I'd rather have natural beauty and a crock of a system than true programming elegance and an ugly environment.

    Currently I am sitting in my big comfy chair in my school bus yellow room (the monitors glowing mixed with the lava lamp make the yellow really nifty) listening to the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy with a nice fresh pot of coffee brewing in the other room.

    The Yankees won (baseball...yes Merlyn some of us have not dedicated ourselves completely), the dogs are fed, the lawn got mowed....and I'm surfing the monestery and banging away on some perl.

    ::sigh::

    How come *that* wasn't a choice on the survey?

    I'd like to stand up in support of everyone in a carpetted cattle pen right now. I know I've come to love my 8'*8' cell as if it were home. It has adequate lighting, a view of a factory and a white birch tree, blinds that obscure said view but don't keep out enough light to keep me from boiling, Windows NT...

    ...the PAIN! The seering HORROR!

    Oh, wait. I get paid. Nicely. To learn Perl much of the day. Life is good. Long live the canvas walls.

    So, while I had wanted to hit YAPC::Montréal, I wound up grinding wires. I cannot fathom the beauty of fresh air or central air when I'm not denied them. Yes, I can't open the windows and not even the circulation works here. I have a fan.

    How about in jail, awaiting trial under the Computer Fraud and Abuse act... or in Stop and Shop, using a hacked EBT Machine. I swear, the things gotta run Perl. :)

    What about, in bed. Next to my sleeping wife? "Just working on my web-site, love. Go back to sleep."

    Just sitting at the office.. trying to navigate my way between all the error messages on my screen to find that window where I was typing my script.

    did I hear someone mention windows?

    Well, I'm here in a stupid little cubicle, in a corner away from windows (real windows), in front of some really ugly Windows..... (NT). Luckily my Perl coding is in SunOS :-) I did have the absolute pleasure of working from home the week after my son was born. Work can be pleasurable when you have you 4 day old son sleeping in on your lap while you code away the time.... I've heard many stories of people that just can't work from home due to the distractions. My week at home was a great test of my ability to get work done, and I'm glad to find I had no problems. I definitely had distractions, but they were fewer and shorter than the distractions at work! Now I just have to find the perfect job that allows me to work from home.... And yes, I'm jelous of those of you sitting in a comfy chair at home right now. But then again, you give me hope!!! --- MungeMeister

    <whine>

    How about, "my office, running my bookstore pretending to be creative with some marketing drivel that I don't want to do while all the employees are on the floor bored to tears because nobody has come into the store in the last hour?"

    </whine>

    Seriously, this is truly boring. Part of the reason I started learning perl was because our "computer guy" told me that he couldn't put our database on the web without HUGH amounts of money for software, hardware, and some gigantic changes to our database. (For those of you wondering, his estimate was five figures). After a few days of pondering, I found perlmonks which made things very clear. All it took was a small change to the database to export the data once in a while, a spare pentium computer we had sitting around, linux, a lot of answers from you guys, and about two months of me hacking at it in between the firings. All because I was surfing perlmonks when I should have been accounting. I think it's a fair trade, really.

    I'm in an old bank vault (our server 'closet') waiting for Sprint to return a call about one of our T-1 lines being down. UPDATE:
    I'm laid off now, and at home trying to find a job.

    How about Accessing perl monks over a palm-powered kyocera smartphone while in the car going to a fencing bout.

    How about distraught in a government centre with toner you just spilled all over the floor, and walls. And 10 minutes before the boss gets back...
      How about a government dorm with plenty of 'puter time and a just-downloaded copy of perl and a fresh-off-the-press copy of Learning Perl? Oh the joys! Siggy

    I am in my cubicle pondering the myseries of Perl.

    It's nice and cool... the sun is blazing outside. I'm here boiling up a master brew of Perl to further my career.
