Seems pretty straightforward to me:

If it is a personal message of thanks, it should be a Personal Message to their inbox.

If it is an informative post ("Idea X worked for me, thanks!") that that happens to include thanks, that is reasonable for nodes which are the equivalent of an email "reply-all".
