Moose isn't outdated, but there are other, light-weight alternatives. Mouse, Moo and Mo spring to mind. I'd suggest you investigate Moose, and if you feel it does too much, try the others. And there's always MooseX::Declare, it's brilliant but it comes with a large start-up time.
