Everyone keeps telling you to ignore Perl6.
Perl5 has done an excellent job with backwards compatibility and introducing new features and deprecating old ones in the right ways. Half the code in the codebase I'm paid to work on is from 1998. Ran on 5.4.0 seventeen years ago. Runs fine now. I have total confidence it will run fine on Perl 5.30.0 in eight years.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
