For a bio class project I am considering writing an evolution simulator (biting off more than i can chew, I know). The question is how to implement this, and what language would be best suited for this sort of project. Perl would be my obvious choice but perhaps someone has a method that is better suited to an alternate language. I have not been able to find much in the way of examples or methods but I have not been looking long. My question is if anyone has experience with this or can point me to a useful resource.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
