Best environment? My own machine of course ;-) A Unix machine (I'm
not picky, Solaris, HP-UX, Linux, BSD, it's all fine), running
X Windows. And vile as my editor. What else is required? On a few
occasions, I use make and m4. I use RCS and CVS often.
I do not understand what you mean by "the remote server". Do you
have a development server? Or a vi server? Or do you think that
all there is to develop is web applications? I can tell you, the
world is more than web.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
