Defleaing a cat with old tactical nukes would seem a little daft(as we say in Yorkshire). Regular expressions do seem to be very...long-winded and difficult, after looking briefly into parse-trees.
Reinventing nukes and cyanide aside, I'm stuck with this approach for my project, so I'll just have to demonstrate the limitations of regexps for this kind of work. Tom Cristiansen's article was informative, and showed me how limited my approach is.
Still, thanks for the help. Always appreciated.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
