system( 1, "first" ); # Won't wait.
system( "second" ); # Will wait.
This is could be very portable though it also
still appears to be mostly undocumented. ):
Update: I posted this long ago and later learned that system(1,...) was never allowed to work except on Windows (and OS/2, for which it was originally written). Any documentation on it appears to be relegated to perlport.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
