Fair point with regards to this site. However the internet as a whole (the Monastery aside if you like) is one big untrusted user and as such JavaScript *is* a security problem and the only solution I know of is to have it turned off.
As an aside it would be nice if Firefox had an option to allow JavaScript for specified sites in the same way there is an allowed sites list for Popup Windows for example.
Update:And NoScript answers my prayers.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
